Apple's app review process gets tons of hate from developers and customers alike, but before you judge Apple's reviewers too harshly, consider what they need to place up with.
Mike Lee, a former senior engineer at Apple who worked on the company's Worldwide Developer Relations team, says that working as an app reviewer is often a lousy job for several reasons.

For starters, Lee says the app review team - like many of Apple's departments - is extremely understaffed for the task at hand.

"People have this concept that there are 100 people in India doing app reviews," Lee tells Business Insider. "It's just people during a building at Apple, and like every other a part of Apple, they can not get enough specialized people. Apple won't compromise the standard of its teams to fill it in. I promise you its tons smaller than you imagine."

To make matters worse, Lee says the app reviewers are essentially tasked with managing a slush pile of apps. Yes, there are quality apps, but he says there's such a lot of garbage that reviewers "may accidentally discard the gem."

Garbage could also be putting it mildly. Lee tells us that app reviewers are frequently bombarded with app submissions that have pictures of male genitals. And no, we're not talking about the occasional image here and there. Lee says that Apple's employees are forced to spend much valuable time "sitting there watching things which will or might not be d*cks all day long."

Here's what he told Business Insider:

It's a very significant issue, trying to filter things that nobody is there to ascertain. Somebody has got to sit there and filter all those d*cks. you cannot let all those d*cks get through. you've got to err way on the side of safety. you've got to possess people sitting there watching things which will or might not be d*cks all day long. Apple refuses to farm stuff bent massive groups of individuals. They enforce having actual smart, educated, well-trained people doing the work. so that means they need to possess a number of their actual employees sifting through a pile of d*cks.

This, consistent with Lee, is that the real reason why Apple has such a strict censorship policy and blocks out any apps which will be construed because the least bit pornographic. it isn't just Steve Jobs felt a responsibility to offer users "freedom from porn," it's that Apple desperately needs how to expedite the review process.

"The only thanks to affecting it's to line the bar thus far faraway from d*cks so that even an image of a cucumber gets blocked accidentally," he says. "Because if you do not, you've got people spending hours and hours of conversation on whether something maybe a bush. it is a huge waste of your time ."
